MAL Hub Web Design

The existing web portal for the MAL does not fully capture the vibrancy and breadth of the Western Cape’s cultural heritage, nor does it provide the interactivity required for a modern digital experience. This challenge lies in designing a user-friendly, visually appealing interface that leverages limited image resources to create an engaging experience. The new design must communicate the historical and cultural depth of the Western Cape through innovative digital elements, encouraging users to explore, learn, and interact meaningfully with the region's history.

The Western Cape Province Museums, Libraries, and Archives (MAL) seeks to establish an inviting, interactive digital hub that reflects the depth and diversity of the region’s heritage. The project involves creating a new landing page along with five interactive secondary pages, aiming to showcase the province's museums, archives, and libraries. This digital transformation will present a modern, clean design that makes navigating the rich stories, resources, and activities of the Western Cape seamless for users.

The project’s primary objective is to design a cohesive, visually appealing web portal that encapsulates the Western Cape’s heritage across six unique pages: a captivating landing page and five secondary pages dedicated to exhibitions, a museum portal, educational resources, links to research, and gamified learning experiences. Through this project, the website should foster a sense of discovery, using interactive elements to bring the region’s historical artifacts, natural beauty, and cultural stories to life. Ultimately, the redesign will enhance user engagement, inspire learning, and showcase the value of the MAL as a rich digital resource.

The concept for the web portal redesign focuses on a clean yet creative interface that incorporates geometric shapes and vibrant layouts to elevate visual appeal, especially given the low resolution of available images. The landing page, titled Stories of the Western Cape, will draw users in with an immersive, image-rich design that celebrates the region’s landscape, community voices, and cultural narratives. Secondary pages will each incorporate interactive elements tailored to their content focus, such as virtual tours, searchable resources, and gamified learning experiences. The overall aesthetic will be minimalist but warm, using colors and forms that evoke the landscapes and textures of the Western Cape.

The redesigned digital hub will use web development tools like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with enhancements from Rive and Spline for interactivity and animation. A focus on UX principles will ensure easy navigation, with clean, intuitive interfaces that support educational content and user engagement. The landing page will captivate visitors through carefully arranged visuals and geometric designs, while secondary pages will feature interactive maps, resource directories, and gamified elements that encourage active learning. The final result will be a streamlined, modern web experience that communicates the Western Cape’s heritage in an accessible, engaging way.
