Dental caries (tooth decay) is the most widespread chronic disease worldwide, especially impacting children at rates significantly higher than asthma or hay fever. Many families face barriers to routine dental care, including lack of transportation, financial constraints, and children’s fear of dental visits, resulting in untreated dental issues. Additionally, many underserved areas lack infrastructure to access regular preventive treatments, contributing to high rates of dental decay.
This project calls for the design and development of a 3D digital dental device aimed at addressing the global issue of dental caries, especially in underserved communities. The prototype device should identify early signs of cavities and facilitate preventive treatments, allowing users to conduct basic dental care at home. With a portable, user-friendly design, the device will provide step-by-step guidance for procedures like cleaning, isolating, etching, and applying sealants or fluoride varnish. Ultimately, this project seeks to reduce the prevalence of untreated dental issues and improve oral health outcomes for individuals with limited access to preventive care, fostering better overall health and accessibility within the community.
Develop a 3D digital product that identifies early signs of cavities and assists in preventive treatments. Provide an intuitive, step-by-step interface for easy at-home application of sealants and fluoride varnish. Improve preventive dental care, reducing dental treatment costs and increasing access for individuals with limited dental service availability.
This solution is aimed at families, particularly in underserved regions, who face obstacles in accessing regular dental care. It is also designed for individuals looking to manage their preventive dental health independently and affordably.
Our proposed solution is a portable, user-friendly dental device that allows individuals to perform preventive dental treatments at home. Equipped with an intuitive interface, this device guides users step-by-step through essential procedures such as cleaning, isolating, etching, and applying fissure sealants or fluoride varnish. By making these professional-grade treatments accessible outside of a dental office, it empowers users to take proactive steps in preventing tooth decay and managing oral health independently. The device is designed to address both practical and psychological barriers to dental care. For example, it minimizes the need for costly and frequent visits to the dentist by offering effective, at-home preventive measures. Additionally, it removes the challenges of transportation, financial constraints, and dental anxiety that many families face. This innovation ultimately seeks to reduce the prevalence of cavities and improve oral health outcomes for individuals who may otherwise have limited access to preventive dental services.
